Google Offers Launches to Compete With Groupon

Thursday, April 21st, 2011

Today Google Offers BETA has launched starting in Portland, Oregon. The service is a response to the failed purchase offer of Groupon and promises you will “Get 50% off or more at places you’ll love.”

3 NYC locations as well as Oakland/East Bay and San Francisco are also listed as upcoming launch cities although no offers appear to be live yet. Expect the service to work very much like Groupon and Living Social with deialy deals being sent by email and a limited amount of time to take advantage of the deal.

While these types of services are often criticized by the media and businesses, we not hear about the hundreds and thousands of businesses who have run these offers correctly and now have a better business because of it. The common themes of businesses who say never again do not seem prepared for the sheer volume of business it can bring in a short time. Be prepared and stocked up after an offer has closed. Limit the number of coupons that can be used per table or per visit. You don’t want a table full of patrons all using a 50% discount. Convert these customers onto a mobile marketing list or email marketing list. Make up flyers to hand out with each purchase and offer an instant bounce back coupon to convert these new customers. Also place a short time frame on redemption. Get the spike in business, convert it to a new list you can marketing to and get out. These will help your experience with social coupon sites better for you, your staff and customers.

Google Tags for Places and Maps Discontinued

Friday, April 15th, 2011

Tags Google Tags for Places and Maps DiscontinuedBack in June we talked about the nationwide roll-out of Google Tags for small business Place profiles. Users were able to enhance their local listing with a yellow tag along side the map and search results. We used this feature with quite a few of our SEO and Google Place clients and realized an instant increase in coupon redemption and in-store traffic to those businesses. For only $25 a month after the 30 day trial we thought this would be a feature that would stay for a long time.

Today, Google announced the end to Tags. “We’ve made a decision to shift our efforts toward other present and future product offerings for local businesses, and will be discontinuing this trial. To that end, we’ve now halted new signups and will be working with existing participating businesses over the coming weeks to help them meet their marketing needs with other Google products where possible.”

Adding Your Business to Automotive GPS Directories

Wednesday, March 23rd, 2011

gps2 150x150 Adding Your Business to Automotive GPS DirectoriesWhen opening a new location or business it can take a while for GPS databases to update and include your business in the point-of-interest sections. Most GPS units have the option to search for restaurants, retail and other small businesses and will display the results listed by distance. There are 3 main sites that share information with GPS databases and submitting your business info manually can drastically speed up the process.

You will need to enter the address of your business or point of interest if not listed.

These directories will forward the information off and your business will be included on the next update of the GPS.

Using Local Business Directories for Rankings and New Sales

Monday, March 7th, 2011

google ranking graph 150x150 Using Local Business Directories for Rankings and New SalesGetting backlinks to your website will help your website appear higher in search engine rankings. How to get backlinks is another story. It can cost hundreds a month if you hire a SEO company, take hours a day harvesting like we do or use lists that others provide. For most small businesses, it doesn’t require thousands of links pointing towards your site to grab the first spot in Google.  It most cases a few dozen is all it takes and it can be done within a few hours and you will notice the jump to number 1 in a week or less.

Backlinks from other business directory sites will also help your Google Place page rank higher. These are assumed to be seen as high authority links by Google and other search engines because the business owner must confirm ownership and fill out complete profiles. These directories also get a lot of traffic from people actively searching for a local service and will lead to an offline purchase, follow up or visit to your business. Add that to the fact only a small percentage of businesses have claimed these profiles and uploaded pictures, hours of operation, website links, you stand to pick up new customers quite easily.

174605 289562975782 4836182 q Lessons Learned From Hersheys Ice Cream Trade ShowWe spent the day today exhibiting at the Hershey’s Ice Cream trade show in Atlantic City. We love forming new partnerships with companies who truly care about there customers and bring everyone together to discuss the latest marketing strategies and products that are available.  We met dozens of operators and exchanged ideas of what they are doing to market their business. We also had the opportunity to be a part of two seminars and speak about optimizing your Internet presence through Google Places and Maps and list building through SMS marketing.

We showed how to claim to your Google Place listing, optimize it to earn the coveted ‘A’ listing and also make small tweaks to your own website to rank in the top 2 of Google.  In small markets where many of these operators were located, there is little competition in most cases. When we searched for there business listings in Google using local terms such as “Ithaca Ice Cream” they were usually already listed and by making the basic changes by claiming your listing, adding photos and videos, they will able to claim the ‘A’ spot very quickly.

Google Offers Now in Pre-Launch for Social Coupon Buying

Monday, January 24th, 2011

After being rejected by Groupon for $6 Billion dollars, Google appears to be almost ready to launch Google Offers to compete with Groupon directly. They will feature daily offers in similar fashion to Living Social and Groupon.

They have made other pushes into local marketing as we all know with services such as Google Tags and Boost. These two roll-outs did not garner much attention but Google has the size and potential to change the social-coupon medium. Amazon recently invested heavily into Living Social and the sheer number of small businesses and number of people looking for deals continues to grow as the economy remains stagnant.
